William Frederick Cody is probably the most famous character of the “Old West” and a really influential character that contributed to spread U.S. culture worldwide during the second half of the XIX century and early XX century.
The different aspects of this iconic personality are too many to enumerate. Born in Le Claire, Iowa, he started working in different trades since he was very young. At 15, he was a Pony Express rider. Shortly after, he fought in the American Civil War, serving with the Union Army, and extended his service into the Indian Wars, where he served as a scout.
He worked for the Kansas Pacific Railroad, where he earned the “Buffalo Bill” surname as he had a contract to supply the company’s workers with buffalo meat. He worked as a gold prospector, train driver, trapper, hunter, or even as a town developer, but he is remembered the most because of his late final occupation as a showman.
He started appearing in “Wild West” shows in 1872, before setting up his own performance that would be known as “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West”. He managed to gather some really famous personalities, like Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, or even the Sioux chief Sitting Bull. The show became so successful that started touring the main cities of Europe for several years, establishing a permanent impression of the American Old West in the popular mind that survives even today.
Our bust portrays William F. Cody with the typical attire he could have worn on any of his shows.
