Some relics, such as the Relic Storm Shield, are mounted on shields, with their disruption fields capable of withstanding even greater impacts. Due to their size and weight, these weapons typically require both hands to wield, but they hold immense importance to the Space Marines who carry them. Many relic weapons date back to the dark days of the Horus Heresy, while others were forged centuries later to commemorate significant events. A Space Marine must first prove themselves worthy before being granted the honor of wielding a relic weapon in battle. These weapons are commonly carried by members of the Space Marine Honor Guard, select Vanguard Veterans, and certain Captains. Perhaps the most famous relic weapon is the Spear of Vulkan, currently wielded by Vulkan He’stan of the Salamanders Chapter.
