The Spark of the Forge
Hestia Hammerhouse’s Tale
To Dwarvenkind, tradition is everything. This truth was drilled into Hestia Hammerhouse from a young age.
For generations before her birth, the Hammerhouse clan plied their trade in the upper levels of their mountain home, far from the riches and wonders of the deep underground. Hestia’s fate was to be a humble ironworker, like her father and his father before him. To dwarves—well known for being as stubborn as stone—there could be no other path to follow.
And so, Hestia toiled away within the mountainside keep of her ancestors, learning the ways of the forge and preparing for a dreary life of crafting hardware. With no tales of heroism or acts of merit tied to her clan’s name, they were never fated to rise beyond their station, nor earn a place in the rich depths of the Dwarven city. Treasures and baubles were luxuries meant for the Dwarves who dwelt below, while those near the surface only stoked their forges to make ends meet. None of her clansmen saw any reason to think differently.

But as she trained to pick up her inherited craft, Hestia quickly developed her passion for the hammer and anvil, finding herself drawn to the beauty of craftsmanship itself, rather than the surety of steel. She beheld the countless legendary weapons and mastercrafted artifacts that the blacksmiths of the deep mountain could create with their own skill, and wished to craft one of her own one day.
Dissatisfied with the idea of crafting nails and horseshoes forever, Hestia sought out lessons from anyone who would impart them. Few blacksmiths were willing to take on an apprentice like her at first. Among Dwarves, legacy was everything; an apprentice who would not inherit their forge was a waste of time to many.
But Hestia refused to be chained by tradition. With the same stubbornness her kind was always known for, she charged forward to make her dream a reality.

Only through her grit, determination, and utter commitment to the craft did she sway her various masters. Hestia stood before countless forges with soot-stained hands and a bowed head, offering her labor freely in exchange for nothing more than the chance to learn. She displayed her reverence for the craft itself, and step by step, Hestia won her prospective teachers over with her true appreciation for creation.
In time, even the most stubborn masters were forced to admit that such commitment could not be wasted. From weapons, to armour, to precious jewellery, Hestia aspired to learn as much as she could, so that she could take her talents beyond her family’s smithy and establish her very own forge one day.
With great effort and time, Hestia Hammerhouse learnt to craft one thing after another, until she finally had the confidence to stand on her own as an artisan.

But the mastery of her craft did not mark the end of her tale. Throughout her youth, the Hammerhouse clan’s proximity to the surface brought Hestia in contact with adventurers from the outside world. These travellers would visit the upper layers of the Dwarven keep to rest, resupply, and peddle the numerous trinkets and baubles they had found throughout their journeys.
Hestia found herself mesmerised by these treasures from distant lands. The adventurers brought endless wonders from the outside world, forged by people of whom Hestia had only heard distant tales. She beheld ornate marvels from the Elves in the North, the delicate mechanisms crafted by the Gnomes, and the endlessly varied works forged by Human hands, all telling tales of faraway kingdoms and tribes.
It was this revelation that truly ignited Hestia’s love for the arts. The world was vast, and there were infinite joys to discover. Hestia no longer wished to create tools of necessity, but things that would stir something in those who beheld them. She would elevate her bloodline not through war or wealth, but by forging wondrous artifacts that would take the Hammerhouse name far beyond the stone walls of her homeland.
Now bearing this newfound dream, Hestia Hammerhouse sought to explore the world with her tools in hand. Her path had been long and hard, but it only marked the beginning of her journey. With hope in her heart, she left the safety of her mountain-bound clan in search of a place to ply her craft and strengthen her art.
Our young heroine’s journey has only just begun. Wherever Hestia’s adventures take her next, she’ll be meeting many new faces, facing new challenges, and learning from new teachers. The journey of an artist is never truly over, so long as they seek to refine their craft.
In many ways, HammerHouse is born from that same idea.
